Field settings for spin bowling
Spin bowling asks for a different field from pace. The ball comes slower, so batters have time to step out and hit over the top, and the ball turns, so edges fall near the bat as well as behind it.
A good spin field has a mix of catchers close to the bat, fielders saving singles in the ring, and one or two boundary riders on the leg side where the slog sweep and the slog go.
Positions in this field
- Wicket Keeper
- Bowler
- Slip
- Point
- Cover
- Mid Off
- Mid On
- Midwicket
- Square Leg
- Long On
- Deep Midwicket
How to use it
- Keep a slip in place for the turning ball. Spin finds the edge too.
- Place long on and deep midwicket to stop the slog sweep and the big hit over the leg side.
- Use midwicket and square leg to catch the sweep and the pull when the ball is short.
- Move the field when the batter steps out. A batter who keeps charging the spinner needs a straighter field.
- Ask your spinner which ball they plan to bowl, then set the field for that ball, not for every ball.
