Mid-off in cricket
Mid-off is an inner-ring fielder on the off side, close to straight, who stops the straight drive and takes mistimed catches off the bowler’s end.
Mid-off stands on the off side of the bowler, a little way back, inside the circle. The fielder faces the batter and watches the straight drive coming back.
It is the off-side partner of mid-on. A deeper version, long off, stands near the boundary.
What does a mid-off do?
- Stops the straight drive and the drive played slightly wide of the bowler.
- Catches mistimed drives that go in the air.
- Runs for the quick single on the off side.
When should you use a mid-off?
- In every field where the bowler is pitching the ball up, as in the pace bowling field.
- When the batter is a strong driver.
- Moved back to long off in the slog overs.
What skills does a mid-off need?
Mid-off needs a strong throw, safe hands for the steep catch and the ability to read a fast shot. The fielder also helps the bowler, since the bowler can often see the batter’s intention from mid-off and mid-on.
What are common mistakes at mid-off?
- Standing in the bowler’s line of sight, which can distract the batter and the bowler alike.
- Backing away from a fast, straight drive instead of staying behind the ball.
- Failing to move for the short single, because the fielder assumes the batter will not run.
What rules affect this position?
This position is inside the fielding circle, so it does not count toward the limit on fielders outside the circle in ICC T20 and ODI matches. It does not count toward the two-behind-square limit unless the fielder stands behind the popping crease on the leg side.
Is it the same for a left-hand batter?
This position is on the off side. For a right-hand batter it is on the left of the diagram. For a left-hand batter the off side swaps to the other half of the ground, so the position keeps its name but moves to the opposite side of the pitch.
In the planner, switch the plan to left-hand batter and every field mirrors for you. See field settings for a left-hand batter.
